Western Australia’s Emerging Wine Region Embracing Alternative Varietals and Sustainability.

Nestled in the southwestern corner of Western Australia, the Geographe wine region is rapidly gaining recognition for its commitment to sustainability and the cultivation of alternative grape varietals.

Spanning from Harvey in the north to Busselton in the south, and extending eastward to Donnybrook and Ferguson Valley, Geographe is home to 57 growers, 26 producers, and an impressive 36 different grape varieties, making it the most diverse wine region in the state.

As Western Australia’s wine regions face increasingly warm and dry conditions, traditional European grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Chardonnay face challenges. In the changing natural environment, the next chapter of alternative wines, including Italian and Mediterranean varietals, offer a promising and exciting new era.

A Commitment to Sustainability

Sustainability is at the heart of Geographe's winemaking philosophy. Wineries in the region are adopting eco-friendly practices to minimize their environmental impact.

Nestled along the tranquil banks of the Harvey River in Western Australia's Geographe wine region, Harvey River Estate stands as a testament to sustainable viticulture and innovative winemaking.

Established in 1999, the estate has evolved from its roots in traditional farming to become a beacon of eco-conscious practices in the local wine industry.

The estate's commitment to sustainability is evident in its vineyard management, which emphasises minimal intervention and a holistic approach to vineyard health. This philosophy ensures that each bottle produced reflects the pristine environment and the estate's dedication to preserving it for future generations.

 Embracing Alternative Varietals

Geographe's diverse climate and terroir provide an ideal environment for cultivating a range of grape varieties, including many that are considered alternative in Australia.

Varieties such as Tempranillo, Barbera, Zinfandel, Bastardo, Monduese, Montepulciano, Pignoletto, Pinotage, and Verdejo are flourishing in the region, offering wine enthusiasts unique tasting experiences.

The Geographe region's embrace of these alternative varietals is not just about diversifying the wine portfolio but also about adapting to changing climate conditions. At the heart of Harvey River Estate's winemaking is a focus on these alternative grape varietals, a reflection of the the estate's Italian heritage.

Mediterranean grape varieties are better suited to warmer and drier climates, allowing Geographe's winemakers to produce high-quality wines that are both innovative and sustainable.

 A Destination for Wine Enthusiasts

Geographe's commitment to sustainability and its diverse range of grape varietals make it an exciting destination for wine enthusiasts.

Whether you're a seasoned wine connoisseur or a casual enthusiast, Geographe's blend of tradition, innovation, and sustainability offers a refreshing perspective on Australian winemaking.

As the region continues to grow and evolve, it stands as a testament to the future of sustainable viticulture and the exciting possibilities of alternative grape varieties.

Visitors to Harvey River Estate are invited to experience this commitment firsthand.

The estate's cellar door offers guided tastings, allowing guests to explore the diverse range of wines while learning about the sustainable practices that underpin their production.

Whether you're a seasoned wine enthusiast or a casual visitor, Harvey River Estate provides an opportunity to connect with the land and the people who are shaping the future of winemaking in Western Australia.
