The Wilyabrup sub-region, located in northern Margaret River, is famous for its unique terroir. Gently sloping terrain and classic pea gravel soils provide exceptional drainage, helping vines thrive while maintaining ideal nutrient and moisture balance. North-facing plots maximize sun exposure, while cool coastal breezes ensure slow, even ripening of grapes.
These conditions produce our iconic Margaret River varietals with vibrant acidity, refined structure, and expressive varietal character. Wilyabrup has earned global recognition for its wines, particularly Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, hallmarks of Margaret River’s winemaking prestige.
This sub-region is a must-visit for wine enthusiasts exploring Margaret River wineries, offering a blend of natural beauty and world-class viticulture (you can check out our Fishbone Cellar Door and Restaurant while you’re there).

In 2014, Kevin Sorgiovanni discovered a 165-acre site in Wilyabrup with remarkable potential. Previously a dairy farm, the land was transformed into a thriving vineyard—a true labor of love.
Today, more than 22 acres are under vine, meticulously planted to capture the crisp, coastal character of Margaret River in every bottle.
Fishbone Vineyard now represents one of the leading Margaret River wineries, producing wines under both the Fishbone and Joseph River Estate labels. Kevin’s vision focused on respecting the land, selecting the best clones, and creating wines that reflect the region’s natural elegance and complexity.

Chardonnay: Gin Gin Clone
Chardonnay is the cornerstone of Margaret River’s international acclaim, and Fishbone Vineyard excels with its Black Label Chardonnay. Across five hectares in three sites, the vineyard cultivates the Gin Gin clone, known for producing wines with bright citrus, stone fruit, and signature minerality. This clone is part of what has made Western Australian wine globally recognized for its quality and finesse. Our Fishbone Black Label Chardonnay is a showcase of Margaret River Chardonnay at its finest, reflecting both the Wilyabrup terroir and meticulous vineyard management.
Cabernet Sauvignon: Houghton’s Clone
Our Fishbobne Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon thrives on four hectares across three distinct plots. The vineyard uses the Houghton’s clone, a selection that contributes to Western Australia’s reputation for exceptional Cabernet. This clone produces wines with complexity, depth, and diversity, delivering rich dark fruit, structured tannins, and outstanding aging potential. For enthusiasts of Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon, Fishbone offers an authentic expression of Wilyabrup’s distinctive terroir.

The Wilabrup Creek enhances the vineyard’s natural environment, providing irrigation and supporting biodiversity. Combined with the north-facing, well-drained plots, the creek ensures vines produce concentrated, vibrant fruit. This careful management of terroir is what enables Fishbone to consistently craft wines that reflect both the land and the climate.
